The Power of Art Therapy

I’ve always loved coloring since I was a child. I can remember coloring any cartoon-themed coloring book that was available, especially the Care Bears themed ones. Whatever sadness I felt at the time was forgotten while coloring. Decades later—in my Art Therapy college course—I learned about the connection between colors and their ability to alter moods; additionally, I learned how thematic patterns and the repetitive motions of various tools (crayons, pastels, water pencils, and paint brushes) could also have an impact on the mental state. This small hobby keeps me focused—centered while I hunker down in the tranche of my economic struggles. It gives me an outlet; instead of lashing out, I take a deep breath before pulling out my coloring book and colored pencils. This small hobby provides me with a restorative break that gives me the strength to continue forward and move with purpose.
