Open Letter from Aorrell Burrell

Dear District Attorney, I am writing to express my deepest gratitude for the mercy you extended to me during my plea agreement. Your decision reflected a rare blend of justice and humanity. I do not take it lightly. Your ability to see beyond my offense — to recognize the potential for redemption — was humbling and life changing. I am deeply aware of the pain my selfish actions have caused others. There is no excuse for the harm I have done, and I think about the victims every day with great remorse. I am committed to never repeat those bad decisions. Your approach did not ignore the seriousness of my actions, but it offered me a chance to rebuild and contribute to society with authenticity and integrity. Thank you for believing in the possibility of change. Your compassion has inspired me to work towards a better version of myself; one that honors the blessing of a second chance. I have made good use of the second chance you have given me. I have engaged in and facilitated countless self-help groups, participated in a victim-offender dialogue with a survivor and gained a lot of insight and empathy from that experience. I am currently teaching a trauma-informed intervention class, leading toward a certification. I have also earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Studies through Sacramento State University, with honors. Upon my release I intend to start a public benefit company, a trauma wellness center. I am trying to be the change you inspired me to be.

Respectfully,
Aorrell Burrell AV0550 / D17-D205
